Matthew R. Doiron

About
Matt Doiron is a PhD candidate at the Eastman School of Music where he supervises student teachers and teaches and assists classes in instrumental music education.  He holds degrees  from Keene State College and Southern Oregon University.

For 21 years he was director of bands at Sanford High School in Sanford, ME.  His high school bands earned numerous distinctions including a USSBA New England regional marching championship and selection to the 2007 NYC St. Patrick's Day and 2009 Presidential Inaugural Parades. His concert bands were guest conducted by  Frederick Fennell and Richard Floyd. In addition to his duties at SHS, Mr. Doiron was the music director of the Strafford Wind Symphony and the conductor of the basketball band at the University of New Hampshire. He has guest conducted bands, choruses, and orchestras throughout northern New England and New York including two performances with the Air Force Band of Liberty.

Mr. Doiron has presented sessions on research and practice at regional, state, national and international conferences. His research interests include motivation, the teaching of composition and improvisation in performing ensembles, and music teacher education.

His arrangements have been performed by chamber ensembles, jazz combos, and concert, marching, and pep bands throughout the northeast.  Mr. Doiron has served in leadership positions for the National Band Association, the Maine Music Educators Association, the Maine Arts Assessment Initiative and the Maine Band Director's Association. He currently resides in Rochester, New York with his wife, Jen.

Ongoing Research Projects

Building Independent Musical Thinkers: An Investigation of Teaching Improvisation and Composition in the Large Ensemble.

With the intent of improving improvisation and composition instruction in performing ensembles, the purpose of this study is to examine two band director/music teachers with exemplary reputations regarding inclusion of composition and improvisation instruction in their performing ensemble programs.


An Examination of Collegiate Music Students’ Motivations for Practice with Dr. Dina Alexander.

This study examines college music students’ motivations for practice through the lens of Self-Determination Theory. The purpose of this study is to further understand the factors that drive and inhibit collegiate music students’ practice and to inform current praxis in collegiate level music education.
